When Understanding isn't Enough
When Understanding Isn't Enough
Sometimes understanding what's happening doesn't automatically make it easier to live through.
In this episode of What Now?, Meg explores the emotional turbulence that can arise during fertility and family-building, even when we understand why control shows up and accept that uncertainty is part of the journey. Through personal experience and gentle coaching insight, she explores what happens when emotions feel intense, changeable, overwhelming, or simply exhausting to carry.
Rather than encouraging listeners to push difficult emotions away or stay positive at all costs, this conversation offers a compassionate space to acknowledge what is hard, notice how we speak to ourselves during challenging moments, and explore what helps us stay steady when life feels emotionally turbulent.
In This Episode
You'll hear about:
- Why emotional turbulence is such a common part of fertility and family-building journeys.
- How prolonged waiting, appointments, treatment decisions, donor choices, surrogacy journeys, and uncertainty can affect emotional wellbeing.
- Why pushing emotions aside or trying to stay upbeat can sometimes increase emotional pressure over time.
- The signs of emotional exhaustion and what Meg refers to as fertility burnout.
- How self-talk can either deepen emotional struggle or help build resilience.
- Gentle ways to respond to yourself with more compassion and care during difficult moments.
Reflection Question
If it feels supportive, you might take a moment after listening to reflect on:
"What am I saying to myself right now, and is that language helping me or making things harder?"
You may also want to consider:
"What do I need right now to resource myself and keep going?"
Or, after a difficult period has passed:
"What helped me through that, and was there anything else I needed?"
There are no right answers. This is simply an invitation to notice your experience with curiosity, kindness, and compassion.
