You don’t need certainty to move forward

For anyone waiting, planning, hoping, and trying to stay steady in the unknown. There are seasons of family-building where almost everything feels like it depends on information you don’t have yet.

A test result. An appointment. A cycle. A donor or surrogate match. A pregnancy milestone. A conversation you’re not sure how to have.

Sometimes the hardest part is that nothing has officially happened, but something is still happening inside you.

Psychologist Pauline Boss wrote about ambiguous loss, the kind of loss that is unclear, unresolved, and difficult for others to recognise. That idea can feel very familiar when you are living with questions that do not yet have answers.

And while you wait, life keeps asking you to make decisions. Do you plan the holiday? Take the promotion? Start the house project? Book the trip? Let yourself imagine the future?

Uncertainty can make even ordinary choices feel loaded. It makes sense that your mind tries to get ahead of it. Planning, researching, overthinking, tracking every possibility, and trying to control the next step are not signs that you’re doing anything wrong. Often, control is protection.
